I Wish Life Threw Better Rocks at Me

Tonight was heavy on my chest but
I wish life threw better rocks at me
For the sight I wallowed in when I came home
The phantom tears beneath my parents’ smiles
They drowned me, but it could be worse

It hurls from pebbles to boulders but
I wish life threw better rocks at me
For my wounds, old and new, tear my skin
But every hurt teaches my body to heal
That as I bleed, I can withstand the pain

I am not of the world’s elite but
I wish life threw better rocks at me
For I am ashamed of my undue privilege
My food, clothes, home, family, and education
A life brighter than the worthy who have nothing

My generation is well-provided but
I wish life threw better rocks at me
For I don’t want to be a seed forever
Too shielded from heat, wind, and rain to grow
I want to blossom so that I can live

I still wake up in pieces everyday but
I wish life threw better rocks at me
For as much as misery is everywhere
It always will be for us
And I’d gladly embrace it to keep learning
